Every expectant mother cannot hide the fact that she is completely taken by the life growing inside her womb. Parents go all out to prepare everything for the coming baby. It is really a great source of wonder to see babies coming out of their mothers’ womb. Prior to childbirth, we are used to seeing fetus during a diagnostic ultrasound. To see a baby which can be finally carried and hugged is one huge miracle of life. So what happens after this miracle? How do we take care of this great gift?
Below is a list of helpful tips towards proper baby handling during the first few hours after childbirth:
Newborn babies do not have the ability to regulate their temperature yet. During this time, it is best to always monitor if they are kept warm and comfortable.
Another good way of keeping baby warm is by holding her so that she may feel the touch of your skin against hers. This will initiate bonding between the two of you.
An APGAR score may be obtained from you baby immediately after birth. APGAR assesses a baby’s heart rate, muscle tone, reflex reaction, breathing, and overall color.
Mothers can start breastfeeding at this stage. A newborn may not initially accept your nipple but it is not a great problem. There are babies who may at first just take a couple of licks before eventually taking it in. For first time moms, you can always ask for assistance if you are experiencing difficulty in breastfeeding your newborn.
If your baby turns out to have a low APGAR score or has any medical condition, she will be taken to a pediatric intensive care unit for further examination and monitoring. If you cannot bring your baby home yet, do not panic. This is considered a standard procedure in most hospitals for babies who may manifest with symptoms of any medical condition. Be comforted with the knowledge that your baby’s health care providers are doing everything they could to make your baby well.
During the first hour of your baby’s life outside your womb, she may get various vitamins that are required to prevent infections. An eye drop may be given to prevent blindness. Babies may have been exposed to different bacteria (such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhea) even before birth or during delivery, so an antibiotic will ensure that your babies’ eyes have protection against them. Another vitamin given is vitamin K. This will make your baby’s blood clot. The nurse may also weigh your baby and get her length plus head circumference.
After you baby’s temperature has stabilized, your baby will also be given a sponge bath.
